Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to use the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of the home of a juror. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she made the decision to go into the publicity industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective.
